Music matters

We’re raising funds to publish a book by Sir Roger Scruton

Understanding music. In depth. To the core.

Being able to name the elements of music. Really knowing how to listen. Discovering the nature of sound. Understanding the logic of harmonic turns. Is there a trajectory, a directionality in the act of listening? Where does music end and mathematics begin? Is aesthetic mastery what captivates us in a brilliant work or is it another reality that we gain access to through music? How does music influence our lives, their quality, structure and moral value? Does it make us better? Are there any shared features between music and philosophy? Do we have the right to judge music as good or bad? Should we strive to popularise high forms of music, and how? Or perhaps high-art music should remain elitist? How does cognitive science approach music?

How often do you ask yourselves similar questions?

We certainly do too rarely. That is why in order to better pursue the mission of the inCanto Foundation we would like to do some soul-searching and return to the very sources of music as such. This fascinating journey must be made if we want to understand the nature of art and fully grasp the objectives of the Foundation. To undertake such an ambitious task we need a guide, a mentor, a master. And there is one person who embodies all three: Roger Scruton. Many of his books on political science, conservative thought, art and philosophy have been published in Poland, but none of his works about music has been translated into Polish so far. We would therefore like to be the precursors in bringing Sir Roger’s thought on music to Polish readers.

From the very beginning we have promoted and published music that we like listening to ourselves. Now it’s time to publish a book that we would like to read. With you. In Polish.

One of the hallmarks of our publishing efforts are beautiful objects. We do not print cheaply and carelessly, but pay attention to detail so that readers can enjoy holding a beautiful book in their hands. This publication will be no different. The graphic design and quality of the materials that we want to “clothe” Sir Roger’s book in will express our respect for its content and author. For the same reasons we will commission the translation from a Katarzyna Marczak. The book will be printed by Mediapixel a company we have successfully worked with on all our publishing ventures.

There is another reason why we hope that you will support the campaign. We are deeply convinced that the role of the Foundation and of other NGOs is to pursue projects that are not going to be implemented by public or commercial institutions. Creating culture, art and knowledge without material gain is what we are called upon to do. We realise that we will not make money on this book, but without our effort it may never appear in the form it deserves.

I would like to invite you to take part in an experiment – let’s make a small revolution and show the world that money and market are not all that matters in publishing. May we bring forth beauty – more enduring and enriching than customer preferences, transient trends and ephemeral narratives. Let’s publish a book together which – who knows? – has all it takes to become a sought-after rarity or a bestseller with multiple editions. It’s a truly exhilarating prospect,

says Łukasz Serwiński, president of the inCanto Foundation.

But in order to succeed we must join forces. Let’s reach for the stars together – for the top shelf – not the dusty, uninteresting and forgotten one, but for the top shelf of philosophical thought which Sir Roger Scruton, well known and respected in Britain and beyond, has practised for many years.

In August 2018, Bloomsbury published Music as an Art, sir Roger’s newest collection of essays devoted to music. Selected essays from the volume will provide the material for the inCanto publication which will also feature a selection of articles from the Future Symphony Institute website.

Distinguished writer and philosopher, sir Roger Scruton has for over three decades taught at academic institutions on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean (e.g. Birkbeck College, Boston University and University of Buckingham). He has authored over 40 books.

Throughout his career as a philosopher, he has specialized in aesthetics, with a strong emphasis on music and architecture. He has also written several novels, as well as memoirs and essays on topics of universal interest. He engages in current political and cultural debates from the viewpoint of a conservative thinker, especially as a polemicist. He is a fellow of the Royal Society of Literature and the British Academy. He has been officially honoured by the Czech Republic, by the City of Plzen and by Virginia’s General Assembly.

In 2015 he published 3 books all of which were chosen among people’s ‘books of the year’. In 2016 he was recipient of the Polish Lech Kaczynski Foundation’s Medal for Courage and Integrity, was awarded the Italian Masi Prize for the Culture of Wine in recognition of his book I Drink Therefore I Am, and was knighted in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List.

The inCanto volume will comprise the following essays:

The translator

Katarzyna Marczak – clarinetist, music theorist, journalist. After obtaining a Master in Theory and Clarinet Performance at the Music Academy in Kraków, Ms. Marczak moved to Canada where, in 2009, she received a Doctorate in Musical Arts at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, focusing in particular on contemporary and chamber music. Upon her return to Kraków, she co-founded Centre of Music and Music Therapy Gaia, working on music education for children and young babies. She is interested in people and their stories, especially in the context of art, and has been a very active writer throughout her life, writing books, interviews, and publishing articles in several journals.

In 2019, she released the book “Eugenia Umińska – Dame of Violin in Memories of Kaja Danczowska”, for the Kraków Music University Press. The book has received critical acclaim: Anna Woźniakowska, in her review in “Nowe książki” magazine (1/2020) called the book “a fascinating lecture”. In 2020, Scientfic Paper Authors and Publishers Society “Universitas” will publish a full biography of renowned violinist Kaja Danczowska, written by Katarzyna Marczak.

Ms. Marczak lives and works in Kraków.

The exceptional printery

The book will be crafted by Mediapixel, a company we have worked with since the very beginning of the Foundation (and even longer). This is a bonus because we read each other’s minds in no time on aesthetic issues, and we can also enlist the creativity of the owner, Mr Jacek Szary, who approaches each project individually and enjoys each stage of production as much as his customers do.

Mediapixel has delivered printing services for over 13 years, offering products for the most demanding clients. The company specialises in printing music packaging for cultural institutions and musicians all over Europe and the United States. The state-of-the-art printing shop includes an Exclusive Prints studio where real gems of printing are crafted using 100-year-old presses.

inCanto Foundation

It was created to delight with music and through admiration point to the One who is the source of all Beauty.
Supporting the artists who make sacred and liturgical music, we take care of the administrative and publishing aspect, so that they can focus on creating Beauty, leaving the formalities to us.
We concern ourselves with sacred and liturgical music, that is music whose source lies in the artist’s or composer’s personal relationship with God and which was created to help man approach the Creator in the liturgy. We are certain that good liturgical music is one of the most important components of evangelization (also the one with the adjective “new”), and in itself can become an important stage in the path to a better understanding of God. We see our superior mission in enabling musical masterpieces to play this evangelizing role. Therefore, on musical grounds we bring the sacred to its roots, we do not agree to treating sacred masterpieces as museum exhibits only. We are inspired by what in this special kind of music is primitive and fundamental – the admiration of the Creator expressed in sounds, in the complete orientation of form and content on expressing His glory. We want to contribute to the restoration of music which, in the artist’s intention, is devoted to God, to its right place.
We delight others with what we have been enraptured by.
