Kraków - Pępek świata

Renaissance Krakow is a place where various religions, nationalities and cultures meet – Roman and Orthodox Catholics, Jews, Armenians, Italians, French, English, citizens of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth; a place where various canons of beauty, ways of playing music, stories of important and trivial things intertwined. We arranged our musical tale into the history of the meeting – residents and visitors meet in one of the tenement houses on the Market Square.

Scaramella – Josquin des Pres

They start with prayer because they believe that the Lord has gathered them together here – the David’s psalms show unity in diversity, make prayer closer to everyone. Then they talk about important matters – fame, wealth, passing away; finally they remember their great heroes and their deeds – the Italian will sing about the knight Scaramelli, who goes into battle; An Englishman about the brave Robin Hood, whose legend has spread all over Europe; The Pole will glorify the wisdom and nobility of Sigismund the Old and bravery of Zamojski.

A song about the death of King Sigmund the first

Then they will sing about love – about a happy and fulfilled love that is a source of torment and suffer. It will be about betrayal and crime, about heartless lovers and leave-taking forever. And because at supper there can be plenty of noble drinks, especially wine – they will unanimously praise their power – because “all the clouds this golden drink eradicates without any trouble”.
